Once upon a time, there was an extremely popular top 40 radio station in northern Michigan called WJML.

The station was considered by many as northern Michigan's first true top 40 station in the late 1970s when the owners felt that the market had way too many easy listening and beautiful music stations for the blue hairs. Almost immediately, WJML was the top station up north by leaps and bounds. However, by the early 80s, other CHRs came into the area such as 106 KHQ and WJML's ratings dipped. The station flipped to AC for its final years as The Music Station. In 1991, Northern Broadcast bought WJML mainly because of its powerful FM frequency at 98.9 and flipped it to a simulcast of WKLT 97.5 Kalkaska. However, the AM side was bought out by Rick Stone, who flipped it to talk.

For years, WJML was the radio station that acted like it could have aired Rush Limbaugh but didn't. However, in the 2000s, they added on 750 AM that started out as an oldies station, but eventually started airing progressive talk from Air America and Michigan Talk Radio Network. Sadly, Stone ended up trading 750 for 1210 in Traverse City and started using that frequency to rebroadcast WJML's signal. Some of 750's shows migrated to 1110/1210 but in the end, they all got canceled. 750 ended up simulcasting 101.9 WLDR-FM Traverse City and its failed country format.

Now, WJML's signal supposedly has gotten a little bigger since the station added a FM translator at 101.1 to rebroadcast 1210. After all, 1210 is daytime only to protect 50,000 watt clear channel WPHT Philadelphia. 101.1 can broadcast 24/7. However, I've heard from a few sources that in a way, WJML is breaking the law.

Under the FCC's translator guidelines, an FM translator can rebroadcast another FM station, another AM station or another the HD signal of another FM. It legally cannot broadcast on its own. However, I'm hearing that 101.1 sometimes breaks away from 1210 to air their own shows.

Apparently, WJML got themselves into an agreement with rival talk station WYPV 94.5 Mackinaw City, aka "Your Patriot Voice" to air some of their shitty programs on 101.1. One such program is hosted by controversial Ann Arbor talk show host Terry "Thayrone" Hughes, an angry old white man who created a stir in the early 2000s when he was the host of the Bone Conduction show on WEMU in Ypsilanti. He was supposed to air the top-of-the-hour NPR news update and decided not to because he was for the Iraq War. He got fired from WEMU but he ended up hosting a daily talk show on WAAM 1600 Ann Arbor and tookBone Conduction with him. Eventually, he and his wife Linda bought WAAM, which airs news updates from Fox News and Glenn Beck's The Blaze. WAAM's talk offerings include Beck, Laura Ingraham, Dana Loesch and Alex Jones. The station even airs one hour of WYPV's daily Your Defending Fathers show, hosted by station owners Brian Sommerfeld and "Trucker" Randy Bishop.

I think it's nothing short of sad that WTCM is the only station up north that SHOULD be doing conservative talk, yet there's also WMKT, WYPV and WJML, all stations that probably don't get anywhere near a two share in the ratings. Yet in northern Michigan, the likes of Thom Hartmann and Stephanie Miller are homeless up north. Not everybody is a right-winged prick up north. Yet, the owners probably all agree with them.

But when all else fails, there's always the internet.
