As somebody who has lived in towns big and small, all I can say is that they all have their pluses and minuses.

I lived near Torch Lake for the first 19 years of my life and country life had its ups and downs. The ups included the lack of police which meant that you could smoke a doobie without getting caught (or be 14 and ride a four-wheeler like me), you had the lake to swim in the summer and ice fish in the winter and the fact that it was peaceful and quiet.

Living up north had its minuses, too. Everybody knew you for your good and your bad sides. People knew when you woke up, went to bed, ate and pooped. There were also a lot of drunks, too.

One negative about living up north was the fact that some people moved up there to get away from all the black people in Detroit. Maybe that's why when I was up north on Saturday, I saw a few signs for some idiot running for Congress named Tom Casperson, a Republican from the UP. His slogan? "Make Washington Listen". He's pro-life, anti-gay and wants to shrink government by getting rid of jobs in that sector. SMH.

Before my trek up north, I decided to listen to Ron Jolly on NewsTalk 580 WTCM online. He has a weekly feature on his morning talk show called "Radio Graffiti" where listeners get to speak their mind in one sentence. Man oh man, talk about brutal. Most of the calls bashed Hillary Clinton; one of the calls was an old lady impersonating The Wicked Witch of the West as Hillary. Other calls pimped that awful Dinesh D'Souza movie that's hardly making money at the box office, another caller was screaming "Infowars.com" and another caller tried to pimp a talk show on the newly-launched 101.1, which is a semi-simulcast of 1110 WJML.

But, TC DOES its ups in comparison to Grand Rapids. Their downtown, for example is MUCH easier to park than Grand Rapids, where parking is beyond affordable. Downtown TC has a lot more retail than GR's downtown, downtown TC has one more movie theatre over downtown GR and there's no building in TC named after a founder of Amway. Oh, there's also no archaic rules protecting people in TC from seeing naked girls at a strip club.

I went to TC Saturday for the Film Festival (though I didn't see any movies thanks to the lack of time that I had thanks to having no place to stay up north after my cousin had a family emergency) and enjoyed being in the middle of it all. I didn't meet Michael Moore or any celebrity, though I had a nice conversation with some chick from Greenpeace. I walked down the street to the State Theatre where I bought a TCFF shirt.

While I was talking with the vendor, a middle-aged man came out of nowhere and handed me a pink, 8 1/2 X 11 inch piece of pink paper. The thing was called "The Myth of the LGBTQ Ally" and this long-winded pile of crap ragged on the LGBTQ community, Michael Moore and even Traverse City native Carter Oosterhouse and his wife, actress Amy Smart. The paper even attacked Moore for showing a movie at one of his venues, Lars Hockstad Auditorium (which they called "an elementary school gym") "The Diary of a Teenage Girl", which showed simulated sex scenes between a woman playing a 15-year-old girl and a man in his 30s. They pointed out that Ted Baehr's Movie Guide called the movie "abhorrent" and "an evil movie". Bear in mind that I once saw a syndicated show that starred Baehr where he showed beat-up prints of old public domain movies from the 1930s. In the show, he proclaimed that the unpopular Hays Code "made movies better" because filmmakers had to adhere to the code.

The paper also claims that children who decide to be transgendered are being abused and that even the Bible claims that homosexulaity is a sin in the New Kings James Version of 1 Corinthians 6:9-11: 9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals,[a] nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.

However, in many versions of the Bible, "homosexual" is replaced with "effeminate", "male prostitution" or simply "men who have sex with men". However, the greek texts use a word that's hard to translate, making the issue debatable.

The paper is from TCFamily.org, a website that appears to not have been updated since 2014 and its Facebook page since 2012. It's run by Bill Wiesner, a local anti-gay activist who acts like he has way too much time on his hands.

As my late friend Dave Barber once said, "if you bash gays, you might be one yourself."

You know, people who come to the Film Festival are there to have a good time. People don't need to be bombarded by hate literature bashing Moore and people who are who they are. It's sad that overall, TC is a nice town, but some of the residents are a bunch of assholes whose ideals belong down south.

Maybe he called in "Radio Graffiti" a few times....
