It was a monumental day last Friday when after 54 years, the Confederate flag was taken down from the state capitol of South Carolina.
Governor Nikki Haley signed the bill that banned the flag with nine pens all to represent the nine victims of the horrific shootings at Mother Emmanuel in Charleston a few weeks ago. The flag was lowered in front of a cheering crowd knowing that the infamous symbol of hatred in the south for centuries would only have a place in a museum and nothing more.
Since the Charleston massacre, companies such as Walmart and eBay have yanked all Confederate flag-related items off their shelves and supplies. But one huge part of southern culture would most-definitely be affected by this horrific disaster: the General Lee.
Not long after the murders, Warner Bros. pulled anything having to do with the iconic Dodge Charger from The Dukes of Hazzard from distribution. Even more, TV Land pulled the show from their schedule.
Of course, the car was named for Union general Robert E. Lee and had a Confederate flag emblazoned on its roof. One of the owners of the original General Lees used on the show, golfer Bubba Watson announced on Twitter that he was going to paint over the Confederate flag on his car with an American flag in its place.
So I wonder, why in the hell did the Dukes producers use references to southern hate to pimp a car that became an American classic? Were they blind to know that the Civil War was fought over slavery and not just because the north hated the south and vice versa? The point is that I think people keep forgetting about the past and that when we bring out objects that put a negative spin on the past, that's what happens: Dukes is yanked off the air and God only knows when - or if - it will return. The near-ironic part of all this is that Dukes is owned by Warner Bros., who also owns Tom and Jerry cartoons that have the racist "Mammy Two Shoes" character and many Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies shorts that were pulled off TV in the 1960s after Martin Luther King was assassinated.
Look, I hate it when a TV show or movie is pulled because of political correctness. I still think that people have the right to see the Duke boys get chased by Boss Hogg or watch Tom and Jerry piss off their maid or watch Bugs Bunny outsmart a black equivalent to Elmer Fudd. I think people need to realize that yes, it's OK to watch these shows, but remember, some of it might offend some people.
At least Dylann Roof wasn't carrying the American flag.
