It was a sad day on April 4, 1968 when the great Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated in front of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, TN. King led this nation to give more equal rights to blacks and all people, period. He wanted people to realize that African Americans were smart, powerful and had the power to lead.

Shortly after King's murder, insurance giant Transamerica, the then-owner of the pre-1948 Warner Bros. film library made drastic cuts to their animated Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies. Most references that they felt demeaned black people were left on the cutting room floor and in the case of eleven of those cartoons, they were yanked altogether. Thanks to several mergers, Warner Bros. is now the official (and in the case of those 'toons in the public domain, ancillary) owner of every single cartoon they've ever produced again. But, those eleven cartoons haven't been officially seen on TV since 1968. Warners did show prints of some of those banned shorts theatrically in 2010 to test the waters of a DVD release, but since many of them are already on the web, it's doubtfully going to happen.

Of course, King's kids are doing quite well, especially Martin Luther King III, who like his father is a civil rights activist. In 2011, he co-founded Bounce TV with former Atlanta mayor, diplomat and congressman Andrew Young. The network, whose slogan is "TV Our Way" shows programming aimed at African Americans older than that of those who watch BET. Many of the programs on Bounce include movies with predominately black casts and TV shows that they produce themselves. Even a few game shows, such as Catch 21The American Bible Challenge and newer episodes of The Newlywed Game have all surfaced on Bounce.

However, with the recent controversy regarding Bill Cosby and his rape allegations mounting against him, several networks have yanked his shows off the air, such as Netflix, TV Land and NBC, which was working on a new version of The Cosby Show. Yesterday, he even yanked ties from Temple University because of the allegations. But, Bounce TV has decided that Cosby still has a home on the digital network, seen on subchannels of local TV stations. (Here in Grand Rapids, Bounce is on WOOD-TV 8.2).

Bounce TV airs Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids every weekend. Not only that, the network even picked up the Cosby Show spinoff A Different World, which now airs daily. Bounce even aired the 2004 Fat Albert movie on Thanksgiving and is planning to air the Fat Albert Christmas Special in the coming weeks.

I find it funny that a network that's supposed to entertain and enlighten blacks is kissing the ass of a man who *allegedly* drugged and raped 15 women starting almost 50 years ago. Even worse, Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids was a poorly-animated moral-fest that overused the same scenes and even had a stock of black characters all voiced by the show's white producers to save costs. Funny that it's not OK to have Mel Blanc voice a black kid walk down the street singing "Shortnin' Bread" but it's OK to have Lou Scheimer voice a kid with a hat over his head sounding like Gilbert Gottfried.

I know, Filmation was a cheap company and Scheimer should be praised by keeping jobs in America in the 1980s while Reaganomics were forcing jobs out of the country. But, it is what it is. Of course, Scheimer died last year and he probably didn't know that Cosby was 'luding up girls in his dressing room. He didn't get to live to see the probable damage that Cos was doing in the past, or even to defend or fight him.

This isn't the first time Bounce has aired programming from people who have hurt women, allegedly or known. The channel previously aired Soul Train, whose host and creator, Don Cornelius was thrown in jail in 2008 for assaulting his then-wife, Viktoria. At the time, he told the media that the reason for the spousal abuse was because he was dying and wanted to die alone. Four years later, he committed suicide at the age of 75. After his passing, it was revealed that he had a botched brain surgery in 1982 that caused him to have seizures for the rest of his life. At the time of his passing, he was in the early process of dementia.

The point is, if Bounce TV wants to showcase some of the clean-cut celebrities of African-American culture, they need to ditch everything Cosby. The fact that Bill has been silent on his allegations plus the fact that he's been hiding behind lawyers has done nothing but further hurt his career. Personally, if I had one, I don't want my kid to even watch Fat Albert since I think he's a liar and a hypocrite telling kids to stay away from drugs, eat healthy and even to stay away from porn while he's smoking cigars, hawking Jello, hanging out at the Playboy Mansion and *allegedly* raping women he drugged up himself.

That's my opinion, my way.
