Bee-otched For: giving us this year's worst Super Bowl ad by default

---

Every year, the Super Bowl gives us some of the most-rememberable ads.

You might not like the game, but the commercials can be quite funny. Being a radio guy, I think last year's Paul Harvey "farmer" ad for Dodge Trucks was one of the better ones. Another ad - not aired nationally, but rather in some small towns like Glendive, MT - was for Old Milwaukee Beer, featuring Will Ferrell french-kissing an old Asian woman.

But the Super Bowl gives us some ads we want to forget. Sadly, most of those ads are for right-winged morons. Remember Pete Hoekstra's racist China ad from two years ago? Cost him the election.

But now, we have an automatic winner for "worst Super Bowl ad of 2014", and it hasn't aired yet. It's for Michigan governor Rick Snyder, who has yet to officially announce his campaign for second term. It was in 2010 that Snyder's first ad aired, and it was during the Super Bowl. It talked about how he started building computers at an early age, blah, blah, blah, and how he ran a successful computer company (Gateway, which he actually buried into the ground).

From what I've heard, the reason for Snyder's win was partly because he had way more funding than his Democrat competitor, Lansing mayor Virg Bernero. A lot of Snyder's funding's from the Devos family. It was partly thanks to the Devoses that Michigan is now a Right-to-Work state and our economic recovery has slowed to a trickle.

I have the saddest feeling that Snyder will win the 2014 election only because his rich buddies are all on his side while he'll continue to shut down towns he sees as "struggling" with emergency fund managers and take pensions away from hard-working Michiganders to please his wealthy friends. Even more, the Snyder camp has reportedly spent more than half a million dollars for his re-election campaign.

The only thing I'll say is that people need to not listen to the hype. Snyder is an asshole who hates the middle class and will do anything to please the Devoses. People need to get off their asses and vote this turd out of office. I hope the next governor of Michigan will fix all of Snyder's wrongs and return Michigan to the direction Granholm and Obama were going in with the automakers.

Things are only going to heat up, and we need it.

Bee-otched For: thinking that an old formula will work in 2014

---

Sometimes in the world of broadcasting, what's old is new again.

NBC hasn't had the best luck all year. As a matter of fact, they're in fourth place behind Fox, CBS and ABC. Only two of NBC's shows - The Blacklist and American Ninja Warrior - made it into the top 25 on the Nielsen charts.

Of course, NBC has been there before, and much worse. Remember the late 70's and early 80's. Yep, pure crap like She's the Sheriff and Pink Lady and Jeff. But in 1984, they launched The Cosby Show and the ratings took off.

I remember an old Al Jaffee article in MAD Magazine as a kid that talked about what TV network initials really stood for. PTL was "Preachers Taking Loot", ABC was "A Bland Channel" and NBC was "Needs Bill Cosby" with an image of him carrying 30 Rockafeller Center. I've always wondered why people found Cosby funny, especially since when he blasted The Simpsons for not being funny, and yet that show was a helluva lot funnier than his.

But now, NBC needs Cosby's help... Again. Last week, it was announced that he's developing a new "multi-generational" sitcom that will have a lot of the same elements as The Cosby Show. His co-star will be Phylicia Rashad and it will be produced by Carsey-Werner. Cosby also used both Rashad as his wife and Carsey-Werner for his two previous shows, including Cosby, which ran from 1996-2000 on CBS.

Now, it is noted that Cosby was canceled only because of poor timeslot decisions by CBS. But the question is, can 76-year-old Bill save NBC?

I'll admit that I have a love-hate relationship with Cos. He's trying to prove that blacks can be successful and smart, but the fact that he is trying to fight a so-called war against obscenity and trying to set a good example for all people does fall flat on his ass.

His biggest example? Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids. Now, I've been watching a lot of that show as of late, especially since it's on BounceTV (WOOD-TV 8.2 here in Grand Rapids). Some of the episodes I've seen have dealt with gambling, smoking, pornography and drugs. Yet, Bill plays gigs at casinos, has been spotted with fat cigars and is a regular at the Playboy mansion. I also love the fact that FA has been lauded for its positive portrayal of African-Americans, yet many of the black voices on the show were that of whites, such as the show's producer, Lou Scheimer, who voiced Dumb Donald. It's also worth noting that most of the people who voiced Albert's friends - Eric Suter (Rudy), Jan Crawford (Russell) and Gerald Edwards (Weird Harold) - have virtually no information on the web about them.

Oh, and it's also noted that Cosby is working on a revival of FA. No word on what the show will be like once it airs (bear in mind that Filmation closed in 1989 and Lou Scheimer passed away late last year).

Granted, I don't HATE Bill Cosby; it's just that you have to take his advice with a grain of salt. He might say one thing, but he'll act against it. He's almost no different than a preacher preaching against gays and yet, he's one himself. I wouldn't be too surprised if Bill cheated on his wife of 50 years, Camille many times. After all, he paid off a woman claiming to be his love child years ago.

So there. I think NBC needs to have better ideas than to bring back Bill Cosby in yet another Cosby Show knockoff. But, it's almost weird to see that the same network that hired Howard Stern to do America's Got Talent is putting him on the same network as Cosby. Talk about strange bedfellows.

But as they all say, it's the viewer who makes the final call.

Since he hit the scene a few years ago, what has Justin Bieber proved?

Well, he can play just about every instrument possible, but sadly, he puts it into bad use by singing pop songs so saccharine-indused that it will give one the diabeetus.

Now, the pop tart is facing deportation because last week, he was busted for underage drunk driving and having cannabis and prescription meds in his system while drag racing his Lamborghini. He's now facing jail time and possible deportation.

Oh, and I find it funny that Mr. Bieber is a practicing Christian. Is it me, or are "practicing Christians" more prone to DUIs than that of normal people? Look at Glen Campbell, Mel Gibson, Scott Stapp and others. Somewhere, Jesus' palm is slapping his head.

I think people who have lost family to drunk driving accidents should be storming mad at Bieber for his irratic decisions. I hope by the time he releases another album, it'll debut so low that his label will drop him and he'll end up playing bad clubs in rural Canada. It's time to deport the little fucker and not allow him back in the good 'ol U.S. of A.

It's too bad Patti Mallette was too anti-abortion when she got knocked up.

A week from this Sunday is a national holiday for most Americans (and a nightmare for pizzarias).

Yes, it's the day of the Super Bowl, a day of beer-drinking, nacho-eating and a day to see who will be the best football team of the year. This year, it's between the Seattle Seahawks and the Denver Broncos at the frozen MetLife Stadium in New Jersey's Meadowlands.

Well, I've already chosen who should win the Super Bowl, and it's the Seahawks. Not because their QB, Russell Wilson only makes less than a million per year, it's not because I think defensive back Richard Sherman's outburst during last Sunday's NFC championship against 49er wide receiver Michael Crabtree was hilarious, but it's because of one thing:

Peyton Manning is an asshole.

Yes, I'll admit, I can't stand Peyton Manning. Why? Well, he's a Jebus freak, he's donated to the Republicans - including Dubya - and he's butt buddies with "Papa" John Schnatter, whose pizza chain happily cut workers' hours over Obamacare, even though the chain's in the black and he lives in a big-assed mansion in Kentucky.

Russell Wilson's a man of God, too, but in a good way. As a matter of fact, he's done a lot of charitable work while Manning's money towards Bush and other Republicans helped to kill and wound thousands in Iraq.

So, there. If the Seahawks win the Super Bowl, it will also show that Seattle can rise after they lost their Sonics to Oklahoma City (why?), plus it's a good gesture considering that it's the 20th anniversary of the passing of one of its finest musicians, Kurt Cobain.

Maybe when the Broncos lose, Manning will blow his brains out that it will splatter... in Omaha!

Last week, my TV was in the shop because of a faulty power supply.

It was kinda nice to have no TV for a week. It was nice and peaceful in my home and it allowed me to do more internet stuff.

Well, last Friday, my TV came home, and some of the commercials made me wish I had a gun so I could shoot it.

With this being a hot election year, many groups - mainly far-right-winged ones - are already advertising their dreck locally. One group in particular is Americans for Prosperity, which is funded by the Koch Brothers.

But one ad that royally pisses me off is from Right to Life of Michigan which has children doing stuff with captions saying pro-this and pro-that set to the theme of the Our Gang shorts of the 1930's. One of the images is that of a baby boy running naked with his butt exposed with the caption "anti-clothes".

Ya know, I love the fact that some of these same idiots behind RTL are probably the ones who pissed and moaned about Janet Jackson's tit exposed during the Super Bowl 10 years ago. Now, isn't seeing a baby's ass on TV considered *GASP!* CHILD PORNOGRAPHY?!? Quick! Somebody call BOTH the FCC AND CPS!

Or better yet, this guy:

But what really grinded my gears is how RTL was behind the recent passing of a law here in Michigan that forces all women in Michigan to have special insurance if they're going to get raped and have an abortion. State Democratic leader Gretchen Whitmer has bravely spoken out against the bill, especially since she was a rape victim herself.

You see, the RTL is funded by many in the far right, and some of these people are anonymous. The fact that their ads are everywhere make me think that some of their donors include some of Michigan's richest, like the Devos family. But the sad thing is that while RTL is pro-life, many who are raised by single mothers live in poverty and are lucky to even graduate high school since some of them have to work full-time jobs at a young age. But yet, the Republicans and Jesus freaks are richer than ever.

Now, I won't be able to watch an Our Gang short the same way ever again.

1.21.14 Bee-otch of the Day: northern Michigan's 9&10 and Fox 32

Bee-otched For: proving that people don't like their programming decisions

---
It's a shame that thanks to below-the-desk deals, northern Michigan now has fewer TV choices than that of Marquette these days.

Yes, THAT Marquette, where for years, WLUC-TV 6 was predominately with CBS, but found ways to shoehorn in programs from either NBC or ABC, depending on what network WJMN-3 was with that week. Now, WLUC is full-blown NBC and WJMN is CBS. ABC's on WBUP-10, Fox is on WLUC-6.2, The WB is on WBKP-5 and MyNetworkTV is on WZMQ-19, which also has This TV and Antenna TV.

In all, four companies own all the stations in da you pee. Sadly, northern Michigan is stuck with - for the most part, and not counting low-powered MyNetworkTV WLLZ-12 and all-news WMNN-26 - two owners: Heritage Broadcasting runs CBS WWTV-9&10 and Fox 32 WFQX while anti-Obama Sinclair owns NBC WPBN 7&4 and ABC 29&8 WGTU.

True, Heritage *should* be the lesser of all the evils up north. They're locally owned by a fellow named Mario Iacobelli whereas WPBN/WGTU are owned by Sinclair, which is known for their bias against the Democratic Party and even yanked shows such as an episode of Nightline for revealing the names of all the people who died in Dubya's fake war in Iraq.

But sadly, the lesser of all the evils is still evil.

True, since Heritage took over WFQX, their news quality has improved by a ton, especially since the newscasts are produced by 9&10. But programming-wise, it's a joke. One of the first things Heritage did when they "purchased" Fox 32 was move Maury to the 3 a.m. graveyard and put The 700 Club on at 10 a.m. Eventually, Maury got the boot and was off northern Michigan TV for about a year or two until WGTU picked it up for the 2013-14 TV season. Now, Fox 32 is a joke filled with cheating televangelists, infomercials, 3rd-rate repeats of old TV shows and the god-awful Bethanny.

Last week on their Facebook page, 9&10 posted a promo for Ellen on their Facebook page. Her guest was none other than Kim Kardashian. Viewers made comments such as "quit making stupid people famous" and "It's just really saddens me that this country is so pathetic that we spend time focusing on people like this instead of important things". I wrote "And sadly, nobody up north airs Jerry Springer. His show is a helluva lot more intelligent than anything the Kardashians have done".

Oh, I got two likes from that comment. I might be on to something.

Yeah, I know. The northern Michigan region isn't the smartest region in the state. All the high schoolers go downstate to college and they stay downstate until they get old and retire. Those who never went to college up north probably make crappy wages because they were a D student at best. But that's the business of television for ya. The lesser the IQ, the more viewers you get. It's worked for Honey Boo-Boo and Duck Dynasty and it'll work for shows like Ellen. But thankfully, the viewers have spoken.

Oh, and guess what Fox 32's airing next weekend? Yep! The yearly 700 Club beg-a-thon! For three hours next Sunday, Fox 32 will air the crapfest in which Pat Robertson will beg poor dumbasses to give him all of their money to keep up with his lavish lifestyle while they dive further into the poor house. Only one other secular station in Michigan airs The 700 Club and it's WMYD-20 in Detroit.

Personally, I would like the FCC to look into companies that have other companies "own" their stations for them. Heritage has a guy from Arizona own Fox 32 for them while 29&8 is "owned" by Cunningham Broadcasting, which owns stations for Sinclair. I think the people up north deserve more choices instead of fake celebrities and televangelists telling them to give them their money. Also, the thought of rebroadcasting 9&10 on 32.2, 32 on 9&10.2, 7&4 on 29&8.2 is quite stupid. Hell, when Max Media owned 29&8, at least they had The CW on their .2! Now, it's only on cable. At least here in Grand Rapids, we have Antenna TV, Bounce TV, MeTV, ThisTV and a few others on our .2s, and a lot of the time, they have better shows than what's on cable.

In a few weeks, a famous event in television history's 50th anniversary will occur, and I'm planning on giving the Bee-otch of the Day to a big TV market that missed out on it because of two owner stupidity.

Don't miss it!

The most-liked radio stations on Facebook in Michigan

MICHIGAN RADIO FACEBOOK LIKES AND PREDICTIONS
Top 40 hot in northern Michigan and Detroit; Country's cool in Grand Rapids

With Nielsen not releasing radio ratings for northern Michigan, I decided, why not create a Facebook like system for northern Michigan, Grand Rapids and Detroit?

And since I don't have a girlfriend, so here it is.

First, northern Michigan:

rank/number of Facebook likes/call letters/(station name, dial position, format, etc)/age group of the majority of Facebook likes

1) 29767 WKHQ (106 KHQ - CHR) 18-24
2) 10566 WJZQ (Z93 - CHR) 18-34
3)  6331 WLXT (Lite 96.3 - AC) 35-44
4)  6086 WMKC (Big Country 102.9) 18-34
5)  5477 WTCM-FM (103.5/93.5 - Country) 25-44
6)  5021 WZTC (104.5 Bob FM - Adult Hits) 45-54
7)  3062 WLDR (Sunny Country 102.9) 25-34
8)  2963 WKLT (97.5/98.9 The Rock Station) 35-54
9)  2064 WCDY (107.9 - Adult CHR) 25-34
10)  1745 WGFM (Rock 105) 25-34
11)  1465 WTCM-AM (NewsTalk 580) 45-54
12)  1031 WFCX (94.3/92.5 The Fox FM - Classic Hits) 45-54
13)    974 WUPS (Classic Hits)45-54
14)    691 WDEE (Sunny 97.3 - Classic Hits) 45-54
15)    611 WCCW-FM (Classic Hits 107.5) 45-64
16)    499 WSRT (106.7/105.5 ESPN) 35-44
17)    469 WLXV (Mix 96 - Hot AC) 35-44
18)    460 WGFN (98.1/107.1/97.7 The Bear - Classic Rock) 35-54
19)    414 WQON (Q100 - Rock) 45-54
20)    405 WTWS  (92.1 The Twister - Country) 45-54
21)    348 WMJZ (101.5 The Eagle - Classic Hits) 45-54
22)    315  WYPV  (94.5 Patriot Voice - Conservative Talk) 35-44/55-64
23)    256 WMKT (1270 - Talk) 45-54
24)    152 WMBN (1340 - CBS Sports) 35-44
25)    143 WJML (1110/1210 - Talk) 45-54
26)    105 WQEZ (EZ 95-5/106-3) 25-34
27)      84 WCCW-AM (1310 The Score - Sports) 35-44

My thoughts....

*Since a chunk of Facebook's users are teens and young adults, it doesn't surprise me that KHQ and Z93 are on top. Lite 96 brightened their sound some time ago, which has made them easily compatible with KHQ and it's working in terms of Facebook likes.
*A lousy 105 likes for EZ 95-5/106-3 is proof that bringing another soft AC to the region was a bad idea, and an even worse idea that Del Reynolds killed rock on 95.5 to bring it to the Grand Traverse area. Real Rock 105/95-5 was Reynolds' best-performing station but he gut it out to please the wealthy but seasonal audience that only lives up north part time. The Bear, on the other hand has been damaged goods for a long, long time since the Ted Cramer era and it's time to put it out of its misery.
*The fact that WCCW 1310 The Score is TC's home for all of the major Detroit teams ain't helping them. With 84 likes, they're the lowest-rated station up north in terms of Facebook likes. Since 106.7/105.5 does a better job on the FM, they should do something else.
*Northern Michigan is too middle of the road for FOUR conservative talkers. WJML is dead last because they don't have any local talk shows, IMO. The fact that they've picked up some of WYPV's shows won't help them.
*All three major northern Michigan country stations are in the top ten. WLDR's in last place because of their lack of localism.
*The fact that tiny WDEE 97.3 in Reed City has more Facebook fans that WCCW 107.5 is somewhat laughable.
*Rock 105's Facebook likes could have outdone WKLT's if 95.5 was still simulcasting.

My predictions for 2014:

-105.1, 98.1 and 107.1 will return to simulcasting each other as The Bear, but their format will be adjusted to a mainstream rock format. Bob and Tom will be gone and since The Bear and Rock 105 already share most of their jocks as-is, Cartman will remain in mornings, Tim Logan will be on middays, Smitty will be in afternoons and NASCAR Steve will remain in nights with the voicetracked Jay Roberts sent packing. As for 97.7, Reynolds will sell it to a non-profit.
-The currently-silent 99.3 and 92.3 in Benzie County will be sold to non-profits or the Patriot Voice folks.
-Everybody at WKLT, save for Terri Ray and Omelette will be canned. (Current lineup: Omelette - mornings, Terri Ray - middays, The Afternoon Trainwreck with Racin' Jacin and Tom Dipshit afternoons and California Girl - nights)
-Somebody up north will give an all-90's format a try
-1310 will become an 'up north' WTKG, carrying liberal and conservative talk
-WTCM will can Sean Hannity

Grand Rapids:

2) 35761 WGRD (97.9 - Active Rock) 18-24

4) 29710 WHTS (105.3 Hot FM - CHR) 18-24

16)   976 WMJH (Super Hits 8-1-0 - Classic Hits) 25-34/45-54
17)    795 WJRW (1340 - Talk) 45-54
18)    588 WGLM (M106.3 - Classic Hits) 35-44
19)    546 WHTC (1450 - Talk) 45-54
20)    446 WPNW (1260 The Pledge - Conservative Talk) 35-54
21)    370 WYGR (GR1530/94.9 - Urban) 25-34
22)    335  WLAW (92.5 The Outlaw - Country/Rock) 35-44
23)    324 WFUR (102.9 - Christian) 45-54
24)    247 WION (I1430 - Adult Hits) 35-44
25)    236 WMPA (Country 93.1) 25-34
26)    169 WTKG (1230 - Talk) 25-34
27)      92 WGHN (92.1 - AC) 25-34
28)      55 WNWZ (1410 The Touch - Urban AC) 25-34/45-54

My thoughts:

*B93 is the top country station in Michigan pretty much by default. Doesn't surprise me.
*The top five stations in town all have a strong 18-24 showing. That's Facebook for ya.
*JQ99 just might be the most-popular commercial Christian station in Michigan. It's also got one of the oldest audiences in the top 10 chart.
*WFUR only has 324 followers. Pitiful for a 50,000-watt station in Grand Rapids.
*WNWZ will never be good for anything unless they have a format that has a strong following. Shockingly enough, GR is down to just one Spanish station, and it's 640 AM (which doesn't have a Facebook page).

My predictions:

-WGRD will get a new PD in 2014,
-Huge will stay on 107.3,
-WTRV will flip to alternative or AAA,
-WTKG will remain a throwaway talker
-WFUR will still attract old people
-WFGR will add more jocks but will play less of the 60's and more 90's

My thoughts:

*It almost doesn't surprise me that Channel 9-5-5 has a humongous lead, especially with their Facebook crowd.
*The gap between 89X and Riff's age brackets speaks some volumes.
*Detroit seems to have a TON of urban stations, but only two made the top 10.
*It's too early to tell how Nash will do in the Motor City, but if they make it into the top 10, I'll be shocked.
*WJR's audience is 18-24? You learn something every day.

My predictions:

-WDTK's Facebook likes will explode now that they have Sean Hannity
-WMGC won't make it into the top 10 by year's end
-AMP might overtake 89X's likes by year's end
-WNIC will re-enter the top 10
-WOMC might add more 90's to increase their likes

Or should we say, "getting away with making water undrinkable"?

A week and a half ago, a storage tank carrying an organic compound used to clean coal leaked into the Elk River in West Virginia. Over 7,500 gallons of MCHM spilled from the tanks. Residents noticed a licorice-like scent to the water supply, and it was deemed undrinkable.

The spill has affected the entire Charleston area, virtually 300,000 residents. It was the third spill to happen within the past five years in the area. The state's governor, Earl Ray Tomblin told residents to abstain from using the water to drink, cook, wash or anything humanly possible. The state's National Guard was there to provide residents with clean water. President Obama even activated FEMA to help out residents.

According to records, the leaked facility hasn't been inspected since 1992. The leak might have been caused by the Polar Vortex that affected the country two weeks ago.

Now, Freedom Industries, the plant's owner has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, apparently from all the lawsuits the company has obtained since the spill occurred. So, in other words, they want the taxpayers to pay for THEIR mishap instead of being the responsible ones.

Ya know, it's amazing that our country is still reliant on things that destroy our ecology, such as coal, gasoline and oil when we can use wind turbines, solar power and electric-powered cars to move our country safely and securely. But thanks to greedy billionaires like the Koch Brothers and companies like Freedom, everything's all a pipe dream. Now, we have fracking to get natural gas, which has done nothing but make water undrinkable.

I think it's time to take a stand against the polluters of the world. We should all feel sorry for the people of West Virginia who deserve a good life like the rest of us. To have their water taken away from them all in the name of polluting is nothing but morally wrong.

As somebody said on Facebook, we oughta make Charlie and David drink some of that polluted water.

Heredity sucks.

For years, my late grandfather battled Meniere's Disease, an inner ear infection that causes everything from vertigo to anxiety to loss of hearing. It can be passed down...

...And I might be it.

For the past year and a half - and maybe more - I've noticed my anxiety levels rise at times to the point where I start to shake. Last year, I cut out caffeine from my diet altogether, but I still feel like shit a lot.

When I was on my trip to Kentucky last Thanksgiving, I woke up feeling like I had slight vertigo. I made the eight-hour drive home and around Midnight or so, I was shaking and dizzy. I went to bed and thankfully, I was well-rested the next day. However, my near-panic attacks came back and at times I felt like fainting. On the day before New Years' Eve, at work, I was running back to my station and I just had that feeling that I walked off an elevator. I told my family my problems, and my aunt - an RN at the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans - told me that I might have Meniere's Disease. I talked to my father about it, and he recommended that I see a doctor.

Well, on Tuesday, I did. Guess what? Yep, I have an ear infection alright. No wonder why I feel like I'm going to fall down a lot. So, he gave me two prescriptions: one was for an antibiotic for the ears and another was Celexa for my anxiety. I was thinking about going to the Walgreen's across the street from the doctor's office, but my doc told me "Fred Meijer's giving away his antibiotics for free". So, since there was a Meijer another 1.5 miles or so down the road, I figured, "why not?"

Now, I prefer Walgreen's over Meijer because in recent years, Meijer has gone downhill in regards to quality. Yeah, Wally's slightly more expensive in some areas, but with my anxiety, I'd rather shop at a smaller store instead of dodging total strangers for 1/2 a mile just for a gallon of milk.

But as they all say, "doctor's orders".

I got to the Meijer pharmacy department, and checked in for the first time. They told me that they would call or text me within the next 30-40 minutes. So, since I had errands to run, I went all the way down to Madison Ave. to deliver my broken TV to the repair shop. I got back, and they STILL weren't done with my meds. I checked in at 4 p.m. and it was now about 5:00. I was hungry, so I went to Qdoba for dinner. During my dinner, my phone didn't ring once. I was starting to get pissed. So, after woofing down my burrito, I headed back there, waited and waited and waited. I finally got back to the consultation section and asked if my meds were ready, and they were. No text, no phone message. Nada. The good news was that my meds were less than $4. The bad news? I WAITED TWO FUCKING HOURS FOR TWO SMALL BOTTLES OF PRESCRIPTIONS.

Ya know, I get pissed when I hear about small mom-n-pa drug stores being forced to close all because they can't compete with Wally's, Wal-Mart or Meijer. I have a great aunt and uncle who live in northern Michigan, and they went to a Walgreen's in (I think) Florida not long after my great uncle had surgery. The people there were rude and didn't work fast enough to get him his meds, and yet, he was on the verge of puking his guts out. Yet, the small pharmacy in the small town they live nearby has been in business since the early 1900's and in the middle of the night, if there's an emergency, the owner - who lives upstairs - will kindly come down to make up a prescription. You can't get that kind of service, even at a "24-hour" pharmacy.

But, that's Meijer for ya. Their owners live in huge mansions and are worth over $6 billion while the small pharmacy owner lives in the upstairs apartment. Thanks, but even if he charges for drugs that the other guys give out for free, I might change my mind next time I need a prescription.

Bigger isn't always better.

1.14.14 Bee-otch of the Day: Townsquare Media

Bee-otched For: screwing up their Grand Rapids stations

As the old saying goes, the lesser of all the evils is still evil.

And when it comes to Grand Rapids radio, that's Townsquare Media, which owns WGRD, Channel 95-7, 100.5 The River, Classic Hits 98.7 and 1410 The Touch.

The other two evils, of course are Clear Channel (WOOD-AM/FM, B93, WSNX, WTKG, ESPN 96.1 and 101.3 The Brew) and Cumulus (LAV, Thunder 94.5, WBBL, Hot FM and WJRW). Both companies kiss right-wing ass by syndicating hate talkers like Rush, Michael Savage and Hannity, Cumulus banned the Dixie Chicks from their stations because of Natalie Maines' anti-Bush statement and both companies replaced Howard Stern on their stations with low-rent wannabes.

Thankfully, in Townsquare's case, they've never ditched Stern from their stations, even when he announced that he was moving to Sirius. Yeah, some of their stations are hate talk, but I'll betcha that one of their country stations are playing "Landslide" as I'm typing this. Here in Grand Rapids, they've proven that an active rock station can still survive in the age of shitty slut pop and a bunch of assclowns who dress up like it's 1876 who play shitty folk music and call it rock. WGRD is near the top of the ratings thanks to the popular Free Beer and Hot Wings program and decent jocks like Jackie Green and Shaffee. However, WGRD still is missing a few things, like, oh, a full-time night jock and especially a PD. According to sources, WGRD is being programmed by Townsquare corporate, and as long as the ratings are good, the lunatics can run the asylum.

However, the sad thing about Townsquare right now is their firing of morning jocks Andy O'Reilly and Dave Kaechle from Classic Hits 98.7 last week. According to corporate, their ratings weren't that great, although it has sparked outrage from former listeners. Now, Craig Russell is their only jock. It is not known what will happen to the station, which at times shares their ratings with sister 100.5 The River.

Recently, WFGR also lost their midday jock, Matt Hendricks as well.

Now, I do wonder why Townsquare is trying to kill WFGR and not The River, a station with a music mix aimed at old farts. But, that's radio 4 ya. The people aspect of the medium disappeared a long time ago. Now, the people have spoken, and instead of Walkmans, they plug their headphones in their Samsung Galaxies. But what might be more tragic is that instead of seeing loser jocks being shown the door, it's hard workers who are the chosen ones. I hope Andy and Dave will be back on their feet again. Even more, I hope Townsquare gets their shit in order.

But then again, what do you expect from a market where your station is at the bottom of the ratings and STILL have a huge afternoon show only five people listen to?
