Well, the coast is clear.

Right now, as I'm watching the 11 p.m. news on WOOD-TV 8 here in Grand Rapids, they're back to running real commercials. They just showed an ad for a Lincoln SUV segued into one for Farm Bureau Insurance. The days of negative political ads are dead and gone, at least for two more years when we get into the mid-terms in 2014.

The painful majority of those bad ads came from the coffers of the four Koch brothers who own everything from coal mines to power plants to oil rigs to Brawny paper towels. They're some of the richest people in America, and they want even more power. It's too bad that they're just not gonna get it.

This past election, the Kochs spent a whopping $270 million on negative ads blasting President Obama and his policies, even going as low as to smack down his Solyndra investments. Sadly, the Kochs are investors in stuff that, well, makes Mother Nature sick while Solyndra was sadly years ahead of its time.

But guess what? Money can't buy an election these days.

Close election or not, people just didn't want a man whose policies echo the last Republican in office, George W. Bush. With unemployment falling and gas prices dipping as well, Americans wanted Obama to keep steering the course. Even with the Koch's support of such fringe groups as Americans For Prosperity, the truth was plain and simple: Americans hate billionaires.

Yeah, $270 million is a flash in the pan for the Kochs - combined worth over $70 billion - but the truth is that still, one voice equals one vote. Some might be buying a Koch product right now, but it doesn't matter. We're stuck with Obama for four more years and by 2016, it'll be the 1990's all over again.

And that, my friends, is when the Kochs wish they had even more Quilted Northern.
