In the past several weeks, the once-great Rush Limbaugh's fame has fallen into oblivion over his idiotic comments about Sandra Fluke. Over 100 advertisers have yanked their spots from his show, two affiliates have yanked the show, two musicians - Canadian rockers Rush and British singer Peter Gabriel - have told him to stop using their songs and on Monday, his syndicator, Clear Channel announced that they will not air national spots on the show for two weeks.

Many great companies have pulled their spots from the show, including AOL, Allstate, Sears/Kmart, JCPenney, Carbonite and Ace Hardware.

However, there are many companies that still give their bucks to the stations that air The Big Fat Idiot's three-hour hate-fest. On Chuck69.com's main page, there's a list of companies that still give their hard-earned bucks to WOOD-1300/106.9's airings of the program here in west Michigan. Sadly, one of those companies is none other than one of the area's biggest, Meijer.

If you go to WOOD's Rush Limbaugh page, there's banners for Meijer everywhere. They might not be there when you get there, but if you refresh your browser, yep, they're there alright. True, one should suggest to the hypermart chain that they should pull their spots, but it may never happen.

Like most other retailers, Meijer sells books and magazines. But like their main rival Walmart, Meijer can be picky on what's on their shelves. Case in point: like most retailers that bow to the Religious Right, Meijer has shields over their racks of Cosmopolitan at their checkout stands "to protect children". I've also noticed that Meijer doesn't sell two recent New York Times bestselling books: They Call Me Baba Booey by Stern Show producer Gary Dell'Abate and former Stern Show regular Artie Lange's Too Fat to Fish. Yet, their book department is loaded to the brim with right-winged hate from Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, Michael Savage and others. I even remember them showcasing a book about how dem lib'rals is tryin' tuh' git right-wing talk off de ayr by bringing back the Fairness Doctrine (and thankfully for them, Obama hasn't come close to bringing it back).

Without a doubt, even though I personally thought that Meijer was the lesser of the two evils between them and Walmart, they do have more problems, such as the fact that they tried to bully the town of Acme near my old stomping ground of Traverse City into getting one of their stores by trying to recall the town commissioners. Traverse City does have a Meijer, but it can support two, especially since Acme has a Kmart and a decent-sized Tom's Market (affiliated with Spartan Stores, which sadly airs ads on Limbaugh). However, Acme just approved a plan to bring the retailer to the unincorporated Traverse City suburb to both sides' likings.

But there's another good reason why the chain's in bed with the righties: they hate gays. Yep! The Human Rights Campaign gave the chain a paltry 20% rating in regards to the treatment of the LGBT community. As a matter of fact, it's way lower than Walmart's 40%! For the record, both Sears/Kmart and JCPenney - who of course has Ellen Degeneres in their current ad campaign - have straight 100's from the HRC.

In all, what else do you expect from a chain that's owned and operated by Reformist Dutch people? After all, their former logo was a Dutch boy named "Thrifty". I know, Fred Meijer was a nice guy who made people's lives simpler by making the one-stop shopping concept a reality, plus the fact that he and his family have given so much back to the community, but the fact that his family supports right-winged hate only cheapens not only their stores and their family, but Grand Rapids as well. Shame on them for supporting Rush Limbaugh and other righties who use their Nazi agenda to promote hate.

Honestly, I'm thinking about getting some posterboard and writing the words "MEIJER SUPPORTS RUSH" on them. Then, I would post them on telephone poles outside their stores so people can make wiser decisions on where they should shop. Their 28th and Kalamazoo store would be a wise choice, since there's both an Aldi and a Save-A-Lot nearby (plus Woodland Mall, which has (surprise) Sears, JCPenney and Macy's), and as far as I know, neither air ads on Rush's show.

I know, Meijer reportedly made almost $16 BILLION last year. But since we vote with our dollars, one voice added to another voice and multiplied by more voices can do massive damage. Let's show Meijer that unless they pull their spots from Rush's show, and on WOOD's website that yes, our boycott can work. Let's make Grand Rapids a hate-free city.

For a chain whose slogan is "Higher Standards, Lower Prices", they can't get any lower.
