Yesterday in Wisconsin, the polls reached presidential election levels in what many would hope would be a successful recall against six Republican state senators.
There was a victory, but it was very little.
Of the six to be recalled, only two state senators saw their seats given to Democrats: Randy Hopper and Dan Kapanke. Alberta Darling, Robert Cowles, Sheila Harsdorf and Luther Olson all saw victory Tuesday night.
One other big winner was without a shadow of a doubt the Tea Party, who rallied for Darling, as I mentioned yesterday. Tea Party leader Judson Phillips organized one of the rallies, and even compared liberals to Hitler and claiming that liberalism claimed the lives of over a billion people. To each their own.
The big reason for the recall election was because of state governor Scott Walker, who has angered many, even those who don't live in the state. Walker ended collective bargaining agreements for state workers, which led to massive protests at the state capitol. Many had hoped that the recall elections would do more, but it didn't.
Sadly, there's still a Republican majority in the state senate, and even worse, US Senator Herb Kohl - whose father started the Kohl's Department Store chain, and even he ran it until he sold it in 1979 - is retiring in 2012. Many feel that with big companies like Koch Brothers buying up elections, money will always be a major factor in getting Republicans elected, and not what these people will do in office.
Ya know, as I've mentioned during these past few weeks, even if we don't vote, we're still voting all the time. The companies that make the products we buy usually support one political party, and sadly, they support the Republicans and their radical agenda. The Koch family heavily funded Scott Walker's election, and they're extremely rich from the energy companies they run. As a matter of fact, Koch Industries made $100 BILLION last year.
So, what does Koch own? Some of the products you buy everyday: Brawny and Sparkle paper towels, Angel Soft and Northern toilet paper, Mardi Gras napkins and Dixie cups. They also make Stainmaster Carpet and Lycra fibers. Koch owns Georgia Pacific, which makes these products and building materials. They also own refineries, pipeline companies, fertilizer manufacturers and cattle ranches. Koch has been in trouble with the government multiple times for breaking environmental laws; there was even a study from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst that states that Koch is the 10th worst air polluter in the United States.
Without a doubt, one reason for Koch wanting to get more Republicans and Tea Partiers in office is so our government could make it simpler for companies like them to pollute and make money. Sad, especially since Herb Kohl's (and I'll betcha that he still has some shares in the company) stores have been rated high for their environmentally-friendly stances.
The people of Wisconsin, you've been duped. Scott Walker and his pals are out to eat you alive. To the people who got those two senators out of office, good for you. But to those whose brains were probably scrambled by a Koch smokestack, my condolences.
It's all about promises kept, not who has the biggest ad budget in an election.
